Progesterone cream for mood - how much & where to apply?

I purchased natural progesterone cream OTC - the insert recommends a dose of 5g/day applied to the breasts. However, my doctor recommended I apply it to any soft tissue area EXCEPT the breasts because I still have regular periods (just starting periomenopause). The insert also recommends applying it between day 10-25 of my cycle, but my doctor said to take it day 1-15. So I'm confused 
I'm also a little concerned that I may be sensitive to the increase not the withdrawal of progesterone as you discuss, but like you said, it's worth a try. So, can you recommend where to apply it and at what point in my cycle I should begin? Thanks so much!
